MMRDA gets go ahead to widen Kopri rail overbridge
The narrow stretch of the Kopri rail overbridge along the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) is all set for a complete transformation as the MMRDA has been given the go ahead to convert the stretch into an eight-lane road. The widening work will be carried out at a cost of Rs 259 crore, sources said.
The undertaking headed by CM Devendra Fadnavis cleared the long-pending proposal for widening the Kopri rail overbridge during a meeting with MMRDA officials on Wednesday .
Currently , the eight lanes from either sides of the highway in Mumbai and Thane converge into four lanes at Kopri rail overbridge, causing huge traffic snarls, especially during peak hours.
Following the construction of new lanes on either s ide of the existing bridge, the old lanes will be reconstructed. The entire project will take around four years for completion, an official said.
This comes as good news for motorists as they used to face a harrowing time in traffic jams along this stretch. However, motorists feel that the work should be fast tracked.
“During peak hours, it takes over 10 minutes to cross this short stretch. We are relieved that the proposal has been approved for the widening of the bridge,“ said activist Satyajit Shah.
